Plantar fasciitis still has me leery of running. So now I’m using exercise machines, the bicycle, and calisthenics to workout.
The situation is such that most men in modern society have been reduced willy-nilly to the status of spectators. And such are the stresses of our modern world, getting worse each day, that the marks of age already begin to appear upon more and more men when they are no more than 30. Excess weight brings on cholesterol disorders and weakens the heart of modern urban man. Too much drinking ravages his liver. The pressure of nervous tension gives him stomach ulcers. And how pitiful a spectacle is the thriving business our drugstores do, crowded as they are with men seeking some alleviation for their ills.

I’d been basing my exercise routine on 3, 6.6 mile runs per week. The winter’s snow and ice took that option away for some weeks (and months) early this year. Trying to resume the mileage all at once as soon as the worry of a slip and fall was past quickly resulted in injury. No more running anytime soon.
As x-rays of both of my knees show noticeable deterioration of cartilage, depending on running for fitness actually no longer makes much sense for me. I’m hoping that a crazy quilt of low-imapct aerobic exercise will add up to a functional equivalent of Long Slow Distance. As working out on a machine does require more concentration to maintain heart rate, the challenge is to avoid winding up with something analogous to garbage yardage.
